Three-Rune Spread

Three runes laid in a row: what came before, where you stand, and what is starting to take shape. Useful when a situation has a history. (The three-position layout is a modern spread, not an ancient one.)

The reader

Sources first. Interpretation, clearly labeled.

I read the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet, carved across the Germanic world from around the 2nd century onward. I start from the sources: the rune poems, the inscriptions, and the Eddic poetry that keeps Odin's winning of the runes alive.

The sources give us the names and the imagery. They don't give us a complete manual for divination, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. So when I read for you, I'll tell you what is attested and what is my own interpretation. I think you deserve to know the difference.

Where the name comes from

Insight has always had a price

I know that I hung, on a wind-rocked tree, nine whole nights, with a spear wounded, and to Odin offered, myself to myself;on that tree, of which no one knowsfrom what root it springs.

Hávamál, stanza 138 in most editions (140 in Thorpe), trans. Benjamin Thorpe, 1866
Yggr
“The Terrible One” is one of Odin's many by-names in the Old Norse poems, and the one that gives this practice its name.
Yggdrasil
“Yggr's steed” is the World Tree Odin hung from for nine nights, wounded by a spear, until the runes showed themselves to him.
Mímir's Well
At the roots of the Tree, Odin gave up one eye for a drink from the well of wisdom. The eye is still there in the water, watching.

The word rune itself carries two meanings in the old Germanic languages: a letter, and a secret.
